What’s not to love about Philly!? After about a 2 hr drive North from DC you’ll find yourself in the “City of Brotherly Love”. For some reason it’s always been one of my favorite cities, despite being able to count on one hand the number of times I’ve briefly visited. I think my distinct affinity for Philly comes from being able to see myself living there; and its ability to remind me of a much bigger version of my favorite city (DC of course). One of the other things that draws me to the city are the remnants of its colonial past. I’ve always loved strolling down cobblestone streets, getting lost following narrow side streets and alleyways; and imagining how historic sites and buildings were used way back when in comparison to their 21st century repurposing.

Needless to say, I had an eventful 2 days during my most recent trip. I was able to fit in some of my favorite things- food and shopping (ALWAYS top 2 on the list). As far as food, I’m obsessed with (and might I add) take personal satisfaction in finding great brunch spots, especially if they’re a MUST-GO in the area, have a unique concept or menu; and best of all, if they’re Black-owned. As an unapologetic thrifter and lover of all things vintage, my next stop is always to the local vintage boutiques and thrift stores. Thankfully, I was able to fit in a bit of both.

An unexpected highlight of my trip was Philly Magic Gardens. When this gem came up on an arbitrary “Things to Do in Philly” search, I only needed a few pictures to know that it couldn’t be missed. The Magic Gardens consists of both indoor galleries and an outdoor labyrinth of mosaic art by Isaiah Zagar. All of the pieces used in his mystical masterpiece were found on the city’s streets. From glass bottles to bicycle wheels, the eye never gets tired of taking in such a unique work of art in the most unexpected surroundings. The photos don’t do it justice, but I hope you’ll get an idea of how amazing this place was.

Let’s hope my next trip to Philly will include another great discovery!
